Counts use Unicode code points, including spaces and LF newlines. Combined characters count separately; platform validation can differ. Paragraphs and list items become separate lines; inner blank lines stay, outer blank lines are removed.

Formatting here does not certify that a destination field accepts every tag. Review the field rules and the source before publishing.

01 / HTML & FIELD RULES

Does Amazon allow HTML in product descriptions?

The same Amazon detail page can contain several different kinds of content.

DestinationStart hereWhat to check
Seller Central product descriptionRead the current product detail page rules. Prepare complete, readable copy. The US rules restrict code and identify line breaks as a special case. A bold or list button is not approval to submit that tag.
KDP book descriptionFollow the separate KDP instructions.Book descriptions follow a different publishing workflow. Do not transfer their formatting rules to ordinary retail descriptions.
A+ ContentUse the relevant Amazon A+ workflow and modules.Images, brand stories, and comparison layouts belong to the appropriate rich-content workflow, subject to account eligibility.

DESCRIPTION / BASICS

What is an Amazon product description?

Decide what the buyer needs to understand before choosing formatting.

An Amazon product description explains what a product is for, its specifications, compatibility and what is included. It helps a buyer decide whether the item fits their needs. Start with verified facts rather than repeating a title, bullet points or a string of search terms. This editor prepares your draft and its representation; it does not update the Amazon detail page.

Product description vs bullet points and A+ Content

AreaMain jobWhat to verify
Product descriptionConnect uses, specifications and buying questions in a complete explanation.Dimensions, materials, compatibility limits, quantities and care instructions.
Bullet pointsHighlight key product facts and supported benefits. Each point is specific, substantiated and suitable for its field.
A+ ContentArrange image, text or comparison modules in a separate workflow.Account eligibility, module requirements and the actual page presentation.

Keep shared facts consistent, while using the description to explain details and boundaries. Bullet fields, description fields and A+ modules are different destinations; do not assume they use the same character limit.

02 / HOW TO USE IT

How to use the Amazon description editor

A straightforward editing workflow, with the publishing decision kept visible.

01

Prepare verified product facts

Bring the details that decide a purchase: what the item does, its measurements, material, compatibility, and what is actually in the package. Keep uncertain claims out of the working draft until you can verify them.

02

Format and inspect the description

Type or paste your draft, then use the existing toolbar to arrange paragraphs, emphasis, and lists. Keep a backup before clearing rich-text formatting. For a literal HTML string, use the HTML-code workspace and inspect the code view.

03

Review and copy the right output

Confirm the marketplace, product category, and exact field. Review the output against that field’s current rules and counter. After saving, inspect the actual desktop and mobile listing; a local editor preview cannot certify the final display.

  1. Bring your own product draft.
  2. Format it with the existing toolbar.
  3. Open the existing HTML view and inspect the source.
  4. If you edit the source, choose Apply changes; closing the dialog leaves the draft unchanged.

03 / DESCRIPTION EXAMPLES

Amazon product description example: before and after

Original examples for the information a shopper needs—not invented sales claims.

BEFORE / VAGUE COPY

Before: vague product claims

“Premium organizer. Great quality.”

The words say little about the item’s fit, dimensions, contents, or use. Adding bold text will not answer those missing questions.

AFTER / ILLUSTRATIVE DRAFT

After: facts that answer buying questions

Keep charging cables and small accessories together in this zippered organizer. The outer dimensions are [verified dimensions], with [actual compartment layout] inside. The package contains [exact contents]. Check your [device or accessory dimensions] against the available space before ordering.

Replace every bracket with a verified fact. This fictional example does not establish a real product specification.

A useful description moves from the product’s job to the details that help someone choose it. Explain what a feature lets the buyer do, then provide the measurement, fit condition, or included part that supports the statement. A zip closure can explain how small items are kept together; it does not prove a bag is waterproof. Keep the language proportionate to the evidence.

Read the draft without your product title beside it. Could a new buyer tell what is being sold, who it is for, what will arrive, and what it will not fit? If not, fix those omissions before polishing formatting. Use a relevant search phrase naturally rather than repeating the title in every sentence.

04 / CHARACTER COUNTS

Amazon description character counts: text vs. HTML

A visual word count and a destination-field limit answer different questions.

ExampleVisible text charactersSource characters
Daily carry1111
<p>Daily carry</p>1118
<strong>Daily carry</strong>1128

Worked ASCII examples include spaces. These string lengths are explanatory, not a certification of every platform’s counting method.

Two drafts that look identical can have different source lengths. The export panel shows text and HTML-source counts, plus the length of your selected output. Markup, spaces, and encoded characters can affect the content you submit. Check whether the destination counts visible text, the source string, or a different representation before deciding what to cut.

Do not borrow a title limit, a book-description limit, or a search-term byte limit for an ordinary product description. Confirm the actual field in the marketplace and category you are using. A third-party counter staying green does not establish that the platform will accept the draft.

05 / TROUBLESHOOTING

Why is my Amazon description HTML not working?

Separate a field-rule issue from a paste issue or a counting mismatch.

What you seeCheck firstA practical next step

Why do bold text or lists disappear?

Does the destination accept those tags?Simplify the copy and check the current field rules. Use the appropriate A+ workflow when you need rich modules.

Why are HTML tags displayed as text?

Was source pasted into a plain-text field, or escaped twice?Look for encoded markup such as &lt;. Return to a clean draft and use the representation the field expects.

Why does Word or Docs formatting change?

Fonts, inline styles, nested blocks, or unusual spacing.Back up the draft, simplify its formatting, then inspect both text and HTML before rebuilding emphasis.

Why is a short description rejected?

Are both counters measuring the same representation?Review tags, spaces, entities, and the actual field’s requirements. Do not trim product facts at random.

Why do mobile and desktop displays differ?

The final content container, line length, and platform styling.Inspect the saved listing on both. Treat this editor as a drafting canvas, not an exact Amazon renderer.

06 / WHAT THE EDITOR DOES

Product description editing and export features

Draft, organize, and review your copy before moving to the publishing field.

For an ordinary retail description, begin with information architecture: a clear opening, concrete product facts, relevant use conditions, and accurate package contents. Formatting then makes the draft easier to review. It cannot replace evidence for a claim or correct a mismatch between the item and a buyer’s expectations.

07 / READY TO PUBLISH?

Product description checklist before publishing

A small review loop is more useful than repeatedly reformatting the same uncertain copy.

08 / SELLER QUESTIONS

Amazon description editor: frequently asked questions

Practical answers about the editor, the content field, and the words you write.

Is this Amazon product description editor free?

Yes. You can type, format, and use the existing editor without registering an account or purchasing a plan. Preparing copy here does not publish a listing or change your Seller Central account.

Does Amazon allow HTML in product descriptions?

The answer depends on the field. The US product detail page rules restrict code and identify line breaks as a special case. A KDP book description follows separate rules. A toolbar showing bold or lists does not establish that a retail listing field accepts those tags.

What is the difference between an editor and a description generator?

An editor helps you arrange words you supply. A generator creates new wording from instructions or product facts. AMZEditor is a formatting editor; it does not invent product benefits, certify claims, or generate copy with AI.

How do I copy the HTML code rather than the formatted words?

In either English workspace, use View/Edit HTML Code to inspect a draft and apply source changes explicitly, or use the export panel to choose HTML, review the source preview, and use “Copy HTML source”. Choose Plain text or Line-break HTML when you need those representations. The existing copy button above the panel keeps its original behavior; the HTML-code workspace also retains its editable code view.

Can I paste a description from Word or Google Docs?

Yes, but rich-text paste can carry fonts, styles, lists, and spacing that your destination does not preserve. Start with a backup of your draft. In the HTML-code workspace, use the existing clear-formatting control when you want to simplify the text, then inspect the source and rebuild only the formatting you need.

Does the character counter include HTML tags?

The export panel separates output-text and HTML-source counts, and shows the selected output’s length. It counts Unicode code points, including spaces and LF newlines; the original editor counter is separate. Tags and escaped characters can make source longer, and a platform may use another counting rule. Read the worked character-count examples and check the destination’s own counter.

What is the Amazon product description character limit?

The current Product descriptions help page says character limits vary by category. Amazon staff guidance also uses up to 2,000 characters as a retail-description reference. Confirm your specific marketplace, category, and current field requirements. Do not use a KDP book limit, a product-title limit, or a backend search-term byte limit as the limit for a retail product description. The character guide explains how to confirm the relevant field.

Why are my line breaks or bold formatting missing on Amazon?

First check the destination field and its current rules. A supported-looking editor preview can still contain tags a retail field removes. If source tags appear literally, check whether you pasted HTML into a field expecting text or whether markup was escaped. Our HTML guide includes a symptom-by-symptom checklist.

Can I add pictures, external links, or A+ layouts here?

This editor does not create or publish A+ modules. Use the relevant Amazon workflow for rich product content. Amazon’s A+ guide explains layouts with images, comparison tables, and other modules. Check eligibility in your account.

Can I use it for a KDP book description?

You can draft text here, but review the current KDP instructions before exporting. The existing AMZEditor filter retains its own limited tag set, so it is not a complete implementation of every KDP formatting option.

Will formatting improve Amazon search rankings or conversions?

An editor does not guarantee either result. Start with accurate product facts, useful benefits, and natural search terms. Amazon’s listing guidance discusses informative descriptions and discourages keyword stuffing. A third-party keyword-match percentage is not an official ranking score.

Do the symbols in the toolbar work in every marketplace?

The toolbar can insert symbols, but insertion is not approval. Decorative symbols may display differently across devices or conflict with field requirements. Review the applicable rules and the final saved listing, especially where a symbol substitutes for a meaningful word.
